Ranakas

Ranakas
The title of one of the many lesser feudatories of a king in the period of Indian feudalism (800-1200). The kings received mil-itary service from them and they in turn conferred estates on their own cavalry commanders called rautas (Sanskrit, rajputras). The ranakas, sometimes also called ranas and thakkuras, were retained in many parts of the Delhi sultanate as subordinate chiefs paying trib-ute to the sultan. They headed their own retinues in the service of sultans.
